Here's a couple of Youtube excerpts of the very, very end of the Mahler 3rd symphony. The first one is Abbado/Lucerne Fest. Orch.

Obviously, the Abbado one is far more technically polished. But I like how the Chile guy gets the brass chorale moving forward, just before the very last cymbal crash, as well as allowing his trombones to go absolutely bonkers at the cymbal crash. I prefer the drive and spirit of the second one. It would be nice to combine the two (that might be called Eschenbach/Philly).

.     .    I would have much preferred that they didn't talk, and just show a Marx Brothers movie to the strains of Mahler 3.

Interesting that someone calling himself 'wagnerianman' has left feedback stating too many mistakes for the Chilean performance. Well yes the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile does fluff a few brass notes, though I also thought a beat was missed right near the very end, but I agree with your take on the spirit of the performance. I would suspect that Abbado and his orchestra have performed the piece rather more than the Chilean conductor too.
I thought the Athen 04 clip was excellent - OK I know that there were a few extra bars thrown into the music just before the coda and some extraneous timpani rolls for the last chord, but it is a grandiose conclusion which worked well for a grandiose event and I wouldn't have descibed it as an abomination. The awful commentary is there for the dumbed-down UK audience who couldn't possibly sit and watch an artistic performance and make their own interpretation using imagination. It probably wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't being read by someone who's usual TV script consists of "Rooney!!!!!!....what a goal for Manchester United...." I wonder who the band was?
BTW I never knew that the cube does not feature in nature - the things you learn on here!

I really like that M3 from Chile. I think that the performance is full of Latin Spirit!

I like them both but 1) Abbado's brass in the final pages is somewhat subdued, 2) Chile concert has the final bar end to quickly. Whoever plays the piece, it is one of the most moving, uplifting, send-you-to-another-world in any music, period.

I just heard the whole  first movement of the Chile M3. It's a very gritty performance and reminds me of Bernstein's first recording, but a little too cautious along the way.......not  wild enough when they should. But that gong is amazing!
Still, the brass is very wild and raw, especially the t-bones. The solo t-bone is great. And you can still feel the whole forces dig in appassionately. A real advantage for being Latino I guess.  ;)
The whole video reminds me of Lenny's M2 from London and the M3 from the "What the Universe Tellls Me"  DVD.
The conductor is Juan Pablo Izquierdo. Kudos for his effort.

I am on the 3th movement of the Chile M3...........wow! this is a great scherzo! The orchestra now is totally on fire, and I wonder why they did not do that during the first movement. The "posthorn" player is not shown, but it's clearly a trumpet.
