Janacek Mania Continues Unabated II (Thank God for BBC Radio)

The link to BBC 3 digital radio archives from the Proms that Sean posted is a treasure trove: among other things you will find these, with the quick link following:

- BOULEZ conducting JANACEK's nonoperatic masterworks Sinfonietta and Glagolitic Mass, the latter in the original version reconstructed, not by Mackerras, as you seem to believe, Dave H, but by Paul Wingfield (with the somewhat less important Capriccio for Left Hand and Chamber Ensemble given in between): http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00d0ssg/

Great if you just want to sample some Janacek and truly fabulous if you are already smitten like me (Boulez, AFAIK, only has one another Janacek recording available, of the Mass, but only on a tribute compilation created and sold by CSO through their own site: http://www.cso.org/main.taf?p=4,1,3,7,2&productid=15422). The Sinfonietta begins at around 5 minutes into the transmission, and the Glagolitic Mass at around 1 hr 5 min. Boulez talks about Janacek and his newly rejuvenated fascination with the composer from around 30 to around 38 minutes into the program.

Performers:
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)
Jeanne-Michele Charbonnet (soprano)
Anna Stephany (mezzo-soprano)
Simon O'Neill (tenor)
Peter Fried (bass)
Simon Preston (organ) (check this out, Barry :D )
BBC Symphony Chorus
London Symphony Chorus
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Pierre Boulez (conductor)

- Plus, Jiri BELOHLAVEK with the same BBC forces -- also hotly debated on these very pages as of late in connection with their recording of the "Broucek" -- performing JANACEK's other early opera "Osud" (Fate): http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00d0w63/ (talk starts at around 11:30 min into the program and the music after 15).

Performers:
Zivny ...... Stefan Margita
Mila ...... Amanda Roocroft
Mila's Mother ...... Rosalind Plowright
Dr Suda/Hrazda ...... Ales Briscein
Lhotsky ...... Ales Jenis
Konecny ...... Owen Gilhooly
Ms Stuhla ...... Ailish Tynan
Ms Pacovska/Fanca/Souckova ...... Martina Bauerova
Doubek as a child ...... George Longworth
BBC Singers
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Jiri Belohlavek (conductor)
Sung in Czech.

Elsewhere, friends of Christianne Stotijn will find her singing Mahler, Brahms, Schubert, and Pfitzner, and many other attractions.

So thanks, Sean, once more, and everyone else: Enjoy the British treat!

I agree, the BBC is a treasure and long may it last.

Heard Osud in a Beeb repeat this afternoon, and stayed to the end. Most engaging.

It's my musical equivalent of "Last Year in Marienbad" and "The Magic Mountain."
