Is there a Horenstein Mahler 2nd?
« on: October 16, 2009, 06:34:57 PM »
I have heard recordings (and have about all of them in my collection) by Jascha Horenstein of all the Mahler symphonies, save the Second.  Did he ever perform the work?  If so, is there a recording somewhere of it?

1. What was the Horenstein M5 you heard?

2. There was a 5th in South Africa in the 50s [not on disc].

3. Someone online has heard a 2nd from the Edinburgh I.F. A bootleg tape as far as I could make out.

I got confused recalling the contents of a list of Horenstein Mahler symphony performances a past contact provided me - I went back and checked, and there was no Horenstein Mahler 5th.  Sorry, my bad!

Odd, how the only missing recorded (anywhere) Horenstein Mahler Symphonies (the 2nd and the 5th) seem to have been performed in South Africa - we can only wonder.

The 'International Gustav Mahler Society' has in his multimedia archives a 5th in tape of August 31, 1961... conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker!!!

Good news!  Now, if the Berliner Philharmoniker can only consent to its release....it sounds like there are no "pirates" floating around out there.
