Getting together to celebrate the years 2010-2011 for G. Mahler
« on: January 17, 2010, 10:32:21 PM »
Shouldn't all the Board members get together somewhere sometime this year to celebrate the 150th and 100th anniversaries of GM's birth and death?

I am surprised that no one has suggested this yet  ??? :-\.

I own a bar in Michigan and would be happy to offer my services to any Mahlerites in the area. I'm 2 hours from Chicago, 2 hours from Detroit and roughly 3-4 from Indianapolis.

So maybe - er - half-country by half-country.

I'm in sunny East Anglia, and think it a grand idea.

Hmm. Well, I'm going to see a performance of Mahler 2 at the Colston Hall in Bristol on March 13th. If anyone else is going, we could have a meet-up there...

What I was thinking is that we get together to celebrate the great occasions but also ask our esteemed members such as Barry to give us lectures on the subject of G. Mahler. And of course, we'll have a long discussion of whose recordings are best for which symphonies and so on.

How about that?

You guys don't need to hear boring lectures on Mahler from me. How 'bout if I get to talk about "film noir" instead?   ;D

Seriously, I wish I had time and money to travel. Perhaps I will someday in the not too distant future.

hey, I didn't know you could lecture on films :o :D.

Just watched "Bullit" on Blue Ray disc. A great film with a really cool acting by my idle, Steve McQueen. Loved the colorful locations in SF and that famous car chase scene down the hills. Wow!

I'm usually not a big fan of car chase scenes. But for my money, the best one is in "To Live & Die in L.A.". I've been doing a whole cycle of films about Los Angeles - or ones where the city is greatly featured.

Seriously, I am proposing that we prestigious Mahler Board members get together sometime this year to celebrate Mahler's birth and death.

Hey folks, it's once-in-a-life-time opportunity ;D :D ;).

Barry, have you seen 'Collateral' starring Tom Cruise?

That was one heck of a movie with great action sequences and acting and some meditation on loneliness and alienation in the modern society. The black actor who played the taxi cab driver was particularly fantastic.

Oh, yes, it was directed by Michael Mann who also made my all time favorite, 'Heat'.

I don't know "Collateral". I do like "Heat" very much. I'm not a huge Di Niro fan, but it's the ultimate Di Niro/Pacino film, I suppose. Anyway, I like it.

The Gustav Mahler Society of New York celebrates GM's birthday every year with a dinner at a Manhattan restaurant. This year should be something special. Check out their web page at http://www.gmsnyc.org/. Any other Mahler societies do likewise?

Go to their listing of recommended Mahler recordings at the link below.  Nice "fodder" for board members to "chew" on:
