Any news on when the new Mahler 3 with Haitink and the Chicago Symphony will be released on their new in-house label?  Previous reports had it being released this month.  I'm looking forward to this release as I read the concerts were quite good.

I just keep checking the CSO's own website. So far, nothing.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing as well.  Just seeing if any of our 'insiders' or Chicago area residents had any info on the matter.

I think it's great the CSO will be recorded again.  Perhaps we'll see some SACDs from them too.

I just found this on www.cso.org in the press release about the new radio broadcast series:

The Orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, led by Principal Conductor Bernard Haitink, will hit the airwaves in Chicago on Sunday, May 6, just as the Orchestra’s recording of the work is available in stores in early May.

By and large, this performance received pretty strong reviews. But I actually read one person's testimony, who thought it was slow and boring. I'm hoping that Haitink isn't excessively slow with this. We don't need another Maazel M3 - one's enough.

Perhaps my least favorite of all Mahler performances -- or at least tied with his M5 (and M1, M6, M7, M8, and M9).

But I actually read one person's testimony, who thought it was slow and boring.

I was there for the Friday performance. He filled 100 minutes, by my estimate--that is, I didn't do an exact timing. That may be slow for some, but I did not find it so. Haitink himself did not lag or show any want of energy. And boring it wasn't.

Wish I had arranged to attend two performances!

Looking at Fulup, not too many performances top 100 minutes. However, Haitink's BPO M3 is nearly 103 minutes. So, the new CSO one doesn't look to be any slower than that one. Maazel takes the cake at 110 minutes. MTT/SFSO runs him close, at about 106 minutes.

I decided to split the Klemperer discussion into a new thread.  I keep looking at this thread thinking that there is some "new" update on the pending M3 Haitink/CSO release.  Also, I wanted to see how "splitting a thread" works.

Oh, who cares about Haitink/CSO doing M3! - it's just going to be loud, slow, and boring. Well, let's hope not. But I'm willing to bet that Zinman ends up doing an even better one!

Someone on the Mahler List brought this to my attention:

April 24 will bring the release as a digital download of Mahler's
Symphony No. 3, a recording derived from CSO concerts conducted by
principal conductor Bernard Haitink last October at Symphony Center. In
late July the download will be available at other Web sites, including
Amazon.com, eMusic.com and Rhapsody.com.

The Mahler recording also will be issued in CD format on the CSO
Resound imprint, to be sold at Symphony Center's on-site Symphony Store and on
its Web site (cso.org) beginning May 1. The compact disc will go into
general U.S. release a week later, with the European and Asian releases
following in June. At least six CD releases, all based on CSO concert
performances, are planned over the next three years.
