Salonen M9 to be released by Signum Classics
« on: February 27, 2010, 07:10:05 AM »
In the latest (March) issue of 'Gramophone' magazine, there's an indication of a new Salonen/Philharmonia recording of the M9 'forthcoming' from Signum Classics, along with a tantalizing excerpt of the Rondo-Burleske on the cover CD.  (Interestingly, there's no mention of this recording at all on Signum's website.)  The magazine also features different present-day conductors contributing an essay on each of the Mahler symphonies (with Salonen taking on the 9th).

Russell,

Thanks for the report.

Did you get the magazine by subscription or from a book store?

I went to a local book store last week but they didn't yet carry the March issue.

I can't wait to hear the Salonen's first go at the Ninth!

I actually got it from a local CD store.  For some reason (weather, maybe?) it was late this month.  The excerpt on the CD sounded good!

June?? ???

I can't wait that long :-[ :-\ :'(.

I really LOVE Salonen's M3rd on Sony. It's transparent, airy, but also has a very good architecture. Great sound.

I fully share John's enthusiasm for Salonen’s M3. He seems to have a contemporary, but not cold, sensitivity for Mahler’s language and gestures. The 3rd, if I remember the legend correctly, was Salonen's ticket to the big-time conducting stakes when he substituted (Tilson Thomas? London?) on short notice. I've yet to hear his LA M4 with Barbara Hendricks but can't imagine that it would be anything less than very well performed. I could imagine an excellent cycle from him, but with the business the way it is, we'll probably get a second cycle from Rattle instead.

About M4: Those who have dismissed Gergiev’s new disc for whatever reason, are missing a remarkable performance. (Looking forward to the canonnade.) :)
