P.S. - While I'm on the Klemperer recording, a deceased orchestral horn player who I was close to for years swore by this particular M2 recording....

It appears that there are several releases on EMI of a Klemperer M2.  Is one preferable to the others (or is it just a matter of cover art changes)?

hey Wade,

Are you familiar with the "live" Klemperer M2 that he made with the Bavarian Radio S.O., sometime in the middle '60s? That one has great sound, and it has Janet Baker in "Urlicht". I prefer that one to the Philharmonia one, but they're both good.

I was referring originally to Klemperer's 1963 studio recording, made in Kingsway Hall, London.

I have four accounts of Klemperer performing M2:

a.  1951 - Live recording w/Concertgebouw Orchestra on a Decca-issue 2-LP set
b:  1951 - LP studio recording on Vox with Vienna Symphony Orchestra
c.  1963 - Studio recording on EMI w/Philharmonia Orchestra on open reel and CD
d.  1965 - Live recording on EMI CD w/chorus & orchestra of Bavarian Radio (Janet Baker)

It's been quite some time since I've listened to all of these.  I need to give them a listen again and report back, when I get time (and transfer the two LP recordings to CD-R).

BTW, I have a video of Klemperer performing Beethoven 9.  It's too bad that no video was ever made of him doing any Mahler, particularly M2.

"I have a video of Klemperer performing Beethoven 9."

.     .    .   which is far better than it ever gets credit for.
