Blu-ray audio disc of M-5
« on: January 15, 2011, 04:51:45 PM »
Anyone here familiar with "Mahler: Symphony N. 5 - The New Dimension of Sound Symphonic Series [7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Disc] [Blu-ray]--Alexander Jero..." listed (but out of stock) on Amazon.com?

Apparently there may be less to this recording than meets the ear.

After I had posted my initial query I discovered that Amazon.com lists similar "blu-ray" recordings of M-2 and M-9. Those two have been reviewed, providing enough information to caution potential buyers.

Still, it would be helpful to hear from any member of the Bored who has actually heard one of them.

I have a few Blue Ray "audio" discs which have worse sound quality than regular CDs in my collection.  Most of my regular DVDs of Mahler have great sound compared to these awful audio blue rays.  I feel you need the best possible audio you can get with most composers but especially true in Mahler's case.

Really? I have both redbook CD and Blu-ray disc of Ozawa/SKO/Sony M9th and can assure you that the Blu-ray sounds FAR BETTER than the CD.

I have since read the Amazon.com reviews of these discs and understand that the audio quality is minimal. Somebody's idea of a way to make money? They may serve better as coasters.

Rather than have a Blu-ray disk with audio only and no sight of an orchestra (likely an inferior one as opposed to Abbado's Lucerne Festival hand-picked players), I'll wait until Abbado completes his Blu-ray Mahler cycle with sight as well as sound.  I'm sure it'll have its share of warts, but at least it'll be the first complete Mahler symphony cycle on Blu-ray video.
