Das klagende Lied: Jurowski / LPO DVD

Hello there,

Does anyone have an opinion of the Jurowski / London Philharmonic Das klagende Lied performance on DVD? Is it worth getting? How does it compare to Nagano's recording of the original version? My understanding is that this DVD is indeed of the same earlier 3 movement version, not the hybrid - correct?

I'm considering buying it but looking for thoughts here first.

I have the Jurowski DkL DVD and enjoy it very much—it's the original 1880 version. His tempos are faster than average, and the audio is a bit resonant (listening in stereo rather than 5.1 surround helps). Here are the timings of the recordings I own (the Jurowski timings are accurate—I've trimmed off the lead-in and applause time):

Jurowski – 25:00, 15:45, 17:27
Nagano – 27:30, 16:45, 18:30
Olson – 29:25, 17:45, 20:09

Note that Jurowski uses only one boy soloist rather than the pair more commonly encountered in this version.

I passed on the Jurowski due to some of the unreasonably fast tempos he utilizes.  Also as I recall the boy singer had me cringing a few times.

The Nagano remains a very fine recording of this work.  Olson uses much more deliberate tempos, but to me these help the fairy-tale that Mahler is telling 'breathe' and gives more time for it to sink in and capture the listener's imagination.  Unfortunately, IMO Olson's choral forces are at times at bit under-manned.

A couple of other good renditions of the original 1880 version floating around cyberspace are those of Alan Gilbert (NDR Sinfonie 2004) and Danièle Gatti (ONF 2009).  Two that I would suggest avoiding for various reasons are the van Zweden and the recent Stenz.

There are two "unofficial" (off-the-air or in-house) recordings circulating on the Internet of Markus Stenz conducting the original version of Das klagende Lied in Utrecht with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Choir and soloists—one given 2012-06-01 and the other given 2012-06-03.
