I've had a listen to the Jurowski/LPO M1. I found the 3rd movement to be excellent. His tempo seems very right to me. Some may bicker about the slowness of the central section and, perhaps, the darkness of the 'Klezmer band'. It all fit for me, quite evocative. The 1st movement doesn't breathe enough for me and seemed, at times to be a little too quick. Not bad, more a matter of taste to me. The 2nd and 4th movement were good, nothing spectacular to my ears though.

I liked the inclusion of Blumine even though it throws me off a bit. It never sounds as if it fits and gives the M1 a different weight. It's very well done here though. Great trumpeting. I enjoy Blumine as an addition.

All in all a decent recording. Not top shelf for me.

I love "Blumine", but I think it works better as an addendum on a recording. In a live performance, I don't mind hearing it second. Anyway, thank you for your input.

Just judging from the brief snippets that one can sample, I feel that there isn't enough 'swing' to the scherzo movement to fully compensate for Jurowski's slower-than-normal tempo. But that's judging without hearing the whole thing.

Hello Barry, I like the performance, feeling that the degree of ebb and flow suits my tastes (much like the M2 by the same team, a performance i really like). Whereas the Blumine inserted in other recordings has always sounded disruptive to me, in this case it seems to fit very well, perhaps because the now-3rd movement has been shaped in context to the Blumine rather than resuming "the regularly scheduled programming" behind I. Also, perhaps this is a stretch too far, but I had a sense that this M1 in this 5-mvmt form was now much more akin to Das Klagende Lied (although frankly I've only heard that work a few times through). FWIW, those are my thoughts tonight from CT. Russ

Thank you Russ. That makes a lot of sense. Maybe I will give this a spin.

I have the Albrecht DLvdE and enjoy Coote's singing, her sections are much more interestingly done than the tenor sections, Fritz doesnt really have it for me.

I'm looking forward to Segeuin's Das Lied recording on LPO, i dont have much time for Jurowski's recordings.

I've now heard the Jurowski M1 and I completely agree with what Russ says about it. Jurowski does an outstanding job in making this 'hybrid', five movement version sound cohesive and unified. Even though the sound quality isn't excellent and the LPO's playing isn't all that tight at the start of the symphony, this now shoots right to the top of favorite M1 recordings. Stick with Chung if great sound and beautiful, spotless playing is your main criterea (and I do like the Chung). However, Jurowski has made a most convincing argument for performing Mahler 1 with "Blumine" reinstated.

Speaking of the Chung/SPO/DG M1st, Fanfare Magazine gave a rave review recently. In the end, the reviewer compared it with the likes of Bernstein, Levine.

It's a fabulous recording by all accounts.

The top 1st for me is the Roth http://www.amazon.co.uk/Symphony-No-1-Im-Sommerwind-Mahler/dp/B006ZV6WI2/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1380106706&sr=1-1&keywords=roth+mahler

For me Roth's account far outshines the Chung which i also have.

Oh, OK, so he's taken over Gielen's main gig. Interesting.
