Does anyone know what Mahler/Alma movie this footage might be from (?). Good examples of it are at 4:00 and 6:37 (it's clearly not Mahler). Also, there's a photo of Mahler I've never seen before at 5:20. Is that in the new version of "The Mahler Album" from Kaplan? Can anyone translate the Russian (?).

Nothing like good-old Russian subtlety. This is kind of scary!

Hi Barry that photo that appears at 5:20 is not in the new Gilbert Kaplan as ive just looked through it again.  It certainly looks like Mahler but it could also be a faux image, before i believe its him id need to have it confirmed.

It's funny you mention that because I was thinking the very same thing on the way home: the possibility that it's actually not Mahler. But it sure looks like him.

Looking over this again - carefully; making comparisons - I think it might be our 'faux Mahler'. The guy at 4:00 and 6:37 has a much bigger head of hair than Mahler normally had, but does have a similar chin and hairline. It's hard to tell just how 'big' the hair is that the person at 5:20 has, because his hair fades into the dark color of the chairs. It sure looks like Mahler, but it seems like an unlikely pose of him that somebody would have had to capture. Hard to say.

The video seems to be a summary of Mahler's three trips to Russia, with citations from letters that he sent during his visits and the reactions of the locals to his conducting and music.  The image after 5'20" actually seems to show the actor who portrays Mahler in a couple of other scenes, probably especially prepared for this video.  Does look a lot like him.

Thanks Mike. I'm inclined to agree with your conclusion. Very interesting.
