New Schumann Symphonies with Rattle/BPO

I've been burned by Rattle a few too many times...but it's intriguing. Certainly a quality/upscale presentation and packaging. You get a fair amount for your money, depending on how you view it I guess. Rattle performs the 1st version of the Fourth Symphony. I wish he would have also included the more familiar second version, at least to give the listener the opportunity to compare.

I won't pick this up, but I'm wondering if they're going to issue the outstanding Mahler 3 that Rattle did in Berlin? That would be nice.

Schumann symphonies, I have: Chailly/Leipzig (Mahler retuschen); Konwitschny/Leipzig (Berlin Classics); Barenboim/Berlin Staatskapelle (Teldec); Sawallisch/Dresden Staatskapelle (EMI); Zinman/Zurich Tonhalle (Arte Nova)   .    .    .  that should hold me.

Also, I don't mean to be 'snarky' but if the BPO is going to charge that much, they should make it a three disc set and throw in the "Konzertstuck for 4 Horns", as well as the "Introduction, Allegro & Finale" (whatever it's called). The Gardiner set has all that for much less money.

Aside from having little interest in Rattle, I'll mention a few of my favorites. Vonk/Cologne is superb, probably at the top of my list. Zinman/Baltimore is nicely recorded, and I think the Zurich recordings are undercharacterized by comparison. (When Zinman is in HIP mode, his performances tend to feel generic.) Kubelik/Bavaria is excellent, too.

I regret the BPO's new label isn't committing to SACD, but it's very nice to have a Blu-ray disc included as a hi-res option.  I'm happy with Dohnanyi/Cleveland in these works, but if the reviews (by non-Brit publications) are good, I'm persuadable.

I love the Barenboim/Berlin Staatskapelle set - full throated, wonderful playing. It's doubtful the Rattle set will match it..in my opinion of course.

True, I love the Konzertstuck and the BPO has a killer horn section right now. It is pretty lean to only have the symphonies at this price point.

I don't know the Vonk recordings. I may have to check those out.

Well, that's that. For 60 bucks (whatever it is), I'd want more music than just the four symphonies.
