Mahler 2016-2017

Want to hear some Mahler? Some near everyone it seems. I looked at websites for orchestras large and small. There are several majors who aren't doing Mahler this upcoming season. And I can't find a 7th or 8th anywhere. Das Lied and the 2nd sure are popular this year. The 7th is being done by Berlin in its American tour. I'm going to try to get tickets to either LA or SF. Unfortunately, Rattle is conducting. I can't stand his Mahler. Anyway, here's what I've come up with. Now to start a plan to catch some them. Pittsburgh doing M2 is a strong draw.

Thanks for the list. Just a couple of comments.

1) The Mahler 3 performance you mention with the San Diego Symphony is to be conducted by Jahja Ling. I heard Dr. Ling give two separate performances of Mahler 3 during his long tenure as music director in Tampa and they remain among the highlights of my musical life. I urge anyone near San Diego this coming May to consider attending.

2) There will be two performances of Mahler 2 in Florida this season. The one you list in March is with the Florida Orchestra in Tampa under their new music director Michael Francis. The other one is with the Orlando Philharmonic on April 8 under their new music director Eric Jacobson. I hope to attend both.

I will definitely make it to the Grand Rapids Symphony M5. It should be interesting with a new Music Director, and possibly a new principal trumpet. Depending on the weather, the Detroit DLVDE would be excellent concert to see.

James: Yes indeed, Dr. Ling is a tremendous talent. And a remarkably modest, decent human being - for a conductor. I was very sorry to hear he's giving up music to go into missionary work. I have attended his M3, M6. and M7 and was blown away by all - much more so than I have ever heard from the Dude.

I was aware that Honeck and the PSO want another crack at M2. I was told that the M2 concerts at the Musikverein (Wien) just didn't work out. However, it certainly looks as though Exton has no intention of continuing their end of the cycle.

Let's hope that SOMEBODY has sense enough (and guts enough) to record the Philly M3, which I presume is with Nezet-Seguin (?).

Nezet-Seguin will be conducting M3.  I will be getting my tickets for this later this summer.  Thus far, I've heard absolutely nothing as to whether their M8 from this past season will be issued as a commercial recording.  Will have to wait to see if the on-air performance of M3 will either be live or on a delayed basis on Philly Public Radio WRTI, and hope to somehow get that, even if via a broadcast.

Herbert Blomstedt will be coming to Philly this coming season to conduct Brahms 3.  I've never seen him in concert, and am looking forward to it, even if he's not conducting Bruckner, his specialty.

You'll probably find Blomstedt absolutely wonderful. He's a solid, thorough musician who brings a special dignity and integrity to everything I've ever heard him do. He's just not the most flamboyant conductor on the podium - and that's a good thing. Very reserved and deadly accurate with a stick. I regret that I never managed to hear his Bruckner or Mahler live, but I have heard his Sibelius and Beethoven and it's terrific. I rank his Mahler 2nd very highly. His Sibelius set is one of my very favorites - and I have a lot of them. Enjoy it!

I couldn't agree more. I had some personal interactions with him over the years that were very rewarding—a surprisingly open and thoughtful man. While in Tampa he did an almost-complete Mahler cycle, missing only M8 I believe. Highlights for me were M2, M3 and M6, but not a dud among them. And a Nielsen 5 for the ages!

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina is performing M6 on May 6&7. Their M3 this year was very good.

I'm certain that these will be the first Mahler performances by 'outsiders' at Davies Hall since Tilson-Thomas and the S.F. Symphony embarked on their own Mahler cycle. Up until now, they've all had to be at Zellerbach in Berkeley. I consider this a huge break-through.

I updated the list for that. But your dates conflict with their website. They have it April 8 & 9. And thanks for pointing this out. I never knew about that orchestra. Road trip!

WOW, I never knew that.  So MTT had a monopoly on Mahler in SF.

MTT is also doing Bruckner 7 for the 2016-2017 season, I believe it is the first time he's conducting Bruckner here?  Can you confirm that Barry?

I'm pretty certain that MTT has done B6 and B9 - cerainly B6.  Bruckner 4, 5 and 8 have always been the property of  Blomstedt in S.F.

Not really relevant but on Saturday we heard Honeck do M1 here in Melbourne with the Australian Youth Orchestra as the climax of a European and Australasian tour - a very intense and quite interventionist performance, though the horns did not have the best night.  In the first half Helene Grimaud played the Ravel G major concerto superbly.  Not sure what the AYO budget is but they seem to get top notch soloists and conductors  - last year Sir Mark Elder in M6...
