Mahler gets talked about on Colbert's Late Night show
« on: January 18, 2022, 08:13:11 PM »
This is brief, but I found it great fun for fans like us.

Stephen Colbert was doing a questionnaire (or, as he calls it, a Questionert) with Bradley Cooper and one of the questions he asked him was, "What is one song you can listen to for the rest of your life," to which Cooper immediately answered "Mahler's Resurrection." Colbert then asked his lead musician Jon Batiste to play some Mahler and Batiste replied, "We don't have enough instruments!" Cooper went on to explain that his work on the Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro he's currently making caused him realize that.

I was paraphrasing, of course, but you can watch the whole thing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXrTPWLWqSU

I believe the question is asked at 3:40, and it's only about 20 seconds.

As part of his interview, Cooper talked about Maestro with Colbert and how he came to direct and star as Bernstein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBO1C9PinhY

Looking forward to seeing that biopic someday! I'm sure there will be plenty of Mahler.

Bradley Cooper is currently playing Leonard Bernstein. How about Michael Fassbender playing Mahler?

John that would be cool, but I can’t picture the facial resemblance in my head.

Well, who out there really looks like Mahler anyway?

One of the descendants of Mahlers brother, Alois, who moved to Chicago, used to work for the Indiana DNR. I learned this from an ex, whose grandfather retired out of DNR in Indiana. He looked a lot like Gustav, according to the grandfather. So, there could be some people who look very close out there.

I beg to differ. Plz take a good look at Fassbender's pics and you'll notice a close resemblance. Besides, half of his DNA is German and he can speak German fluently.

Okay, you’re actually right John. I can see the resemblance a bit now.

Plus yes, I remember he does speak fluent German. He did so in my personal favorite film, Inglourious Basterds.

I think we’re onto something here. Who’s gonna contact Stephen Spielberg?

Only kidding, though if Mahler’s music plays a role in the Bernstein biopic I’m sure we might see a resurgence in popularity. Especially since Bradley Cooper is in it, the film will probably reach a wide audience.

Yep, I expect lots of Mahler stuff in the upcoming Cooper/Bernstein biography.

As for a Maher film I'd suggest someone like Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will be Blood, The Master) to direct. ^

I agree with this 100%, John. Hell give me DDL to play Mahler. It would take awhile though. He'd have to study conducting and composition for a few years to fully immerse himself in the part.
I think Alfonso Curan would also direct a great Mahler movie.

Oh man, what I'd give to see someone as good as DDL play Mahler. Unfortunately the guy has stated he has retired from acting. A shame, but it's best for things to end while they're great I guess. Otherwise he'll end up doing grandpa roles in rom-coms like Robert De Niro.

Jokes aside, De Niro's neurotic fatherly role in Bradley Cooper's 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook was fantastic. Loved that movie. Cooper is such a good actor... usually.

By the way, Cooper really looks the part of Bernstein. He'll likely do a great job.

Maybe check out Fassbaender in ‘A Dangerous Method’ where he plays Carl Jung.
