Timings for Paavo Jarvi M7 on Alpha
« on: February 23, 2026, 06:38:50 PM »
I crunched the math this morning. Paavo Jarvi's Zurich recording of M7 has the following timings: I - 21:08; II - 14:44; III - 9:27; IV - 11:13; V - 18:09. That's oddly proportioned, but I don't know if some of that 18 minute timing for the finale is applause or not. My guess that there must be at least some. If not, then this will be somewhat similar to the MTT/S.F.S. M7 recording. Zippy, zippy, zippy! I'll gladly listen to this at Spotify, but I doubt if I'll buy myself a hard copy.

While I like a generally quicker tempo for the second Nocturne (4th movement), I don't like it to sound breathless either. ALSO, folks, here's yet another M7 opening where the timpanist doesn't even attempt to play his/her rolls on the two drums employed. Bychkov has a slower opening to his finale, but the timpanist plays the written rolls.
