I am saddened to advise you the death of our distinguished colleague, Jonathan Carr, on 12 June, aged 66, as reported in yesterday's FINANCIAL TIMES and the current issue of THE ECONOMIST.

Sorry to read this sad news, I had the pleasure of corresponding with him breifly about eight years ago by e-mail after reading his biography of Mahler.
We discussed Das Lied and the 9th symphony and thier philosophical meaning. His book is a pleasure too read, insightful, informative, with a down to earth feel to it.

He has given me a greater understanding of Mahler's music, and am very gratefull for it.

Sorry to have about that so belatedly.

It was a reference, at the back of his book to the M" under Oscar Fried that led me to the CDs.

66 is far too young, these days.
