Carlos Kleiber - DLvDE !!!
« on: November 29, 2008, 04:28:12 PM »
Never knew this acclaimed maestro had recorded any Mahler, so when I stumbled over this recording from 1967 i took it with me.
The downside first. It is a live recording with a somewhat boxed sound in mono. Not bad at all, but worth mentioning. The applause at the end comes a little to quickly for my taste. It could have been edited out. Christa Ludwig is a little too uninvolved in her first two movements, but does a very good "Abschied".
The rest is pure gold. Waldemar Kmennt, newer heard him before, is now my absolute favourite in "Das lied ...", even topping King and Wunderlich. Its a no holds barrel performance, and I love the way he is balancing on the limit of what his voice can master, and doing it in a live performance.
The orchestra, The Vienna Symphony, may sound a bit rugged at times, but Kleiber seems to get the most out of them. He never experiment with tempos, and in my book this often spells music.
The bonus filler is an OK wayfairer with Ludwig and Böhm.

PS.
Have ordered the Kubelik/DLvDE/Audite also with Kmennt, this time paired with Baker, and also live, with one of my favourite orchestras - BRSO

Yes, the Kubelik one is truly better - one of the very best "DLvdE" recordings out there. IMHO, the Kleiber one doesn't show the conductor at his greatest.
