Anyone know of any special plans (at the rumor stage?) for the upcoming 150th Mahler birth in 2010, or his 100th death commeneration in 2011?  Festivals of performances in North America or Europe?

My guess is that you'll see more things happen in 2011-12. Maybe not.

Hi everybody,

A spokesperson of the RCO  has announced that the RCO will perform all Mahler symphonies, including the 10th and DLvdE in 2010 as a tribute to Gustav Mahler. The event should be regarded as a "new" Mahlerfeest just like the one in 1920 and 1995. Good times are coming!

Best regards from the windmill country!

God bless Amsterdam and the rest of Holland (Rotterdam has a great gong!)

Here's what's being planned in the Czech Republic:

This includes a performance by Thomas Hampson at Mahler's birth house on his 150th birthday next year.

The best part is the post-holocaust looking G.M. memorial that they're going to put up in Jihlava. Have a look.

It's not a festival, but the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra starts their 2009-10 season with the Mahler 5th.  Robertson always gets them going strong, even early in the season, so I expect it to be pretty awesome'.

I hope the RCO can do some or all of symphonies over a short period of time for visitors traveling from a far.
The last time I was in Amsterdam was 37 years when I was 19 (and single!).  You can imagine what it was like for a young guy in that neighborhood near Central Station!   Grin

KC gets M4 and the Adagio to the 10th (I told the Music Director who is a neighbor of mine that I was not pleased and that I would not applaud the performance as I do not, as a rule, applaud between movements) for 2009-10. When the new concert hall is open in 2011-12 they are considering M2 and maybe more in celebration of the hall and Mahler's 100th death commemoration.

Hi Toblacher,

No details yet. It was on the teletext last thursday. The KCO website has not even mentioned it, but usually, the news on the teletext is accurate. I guess we will have to wait for details. What was stated clearly though, was that KCO was to perform all symphonies including the 10th and DLvdE, i.e. no participation of guest orchestras. That's what I call a challenge!

Best regards,

Amsterdam is amazing. I pity the string players who like to play nothing but Schubert & Brahms.

Hi everybody,

Amsterdam truly is amazing. Also the RCO with their RCO Live abel has delivered first class renditions with superb sound quality. Let's see if the RCO gets voted best orchestra again.
Do you favour any particular concerts in this series, taking into account the combination of symphony and conductor?

Best regards from Mengelberg country,

I think Haitink's Chicago Mahler recordings have been just incredibly boring, but his RCO Mahler 4th is pretty darn good. From Jansons, I definitely like his Mahler 6 more than his 5th. I think it's better recorded too. That said, I do like forward to the Jansons M7. Hopefully, it won't be quite as sluggish and luxurious sounding as the Chailly (who I think did a great M3 and M5).
