Any special Mahler events in 2010/2011?

Indeed, you can't find the Mahler Edition on the DG website yet... I found it by accident in their paper catalogue. But I believe it will be listed in the 'coming soon' section of the website shortly. I just wonder if there will be any real new surprises.

I heard that the entire Ashkenazy/Sydney SO Mahler cycle and Salonen/PO M9th might be recorded.

Just saw confirmation of the Ashkenazy cycle in the new 'Gramophone'.  It'll start this month (February) with the M1, Blumine, and Wayfarer songs, and end in November 2011 with the M2.

I also confirmed the forthcoming release of the Salonen M9 in a new thread yesterday.

I have Ashkenazy's M6, M7 (twice), and M9th. They are all exceptionally played and recorded (with CPO on Exton). I particularly like the Ninth very much, as DH said he does.

Mahler’s universe in twelve days! In the largest European Mahler programme of the season, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and seven guest orchestras from around the Nordic region will be performing all his nine completed symphonies and the final, unfinished tenth (as completed by Carpenter).
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra will be opening the festival with Mahler’s first symphony. They will also be performing his monumental eighth symphony, which is rarely performed on account of its requiring a 500-strong chorus.
In addition to the concerts will be a large Mahler exhibition".

Also, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra is putting on a mammoth performance of M8 as part of it's own 50th anniversary celebrations on 23rd October at the National Conference Centre in Hanoi with the following line-up:
Conductor: Honna Tetsuji
Orchestra: Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, including 90 musicians plus 30 extra members from other orchestras in Vietnam.
Soloists: 3 sopranos, 2 mezzo sopranos, 1 tenor, 1 baritone, 1 bass.
Chorus: including one children choir (140 people), two mixed choir (430 each), totally 1000 people (50 % will be Vietnamese and 50% will be foreigners)

I would so love to be at this event!

I will be singing in this special concert (as part of the Hanoi International Choir), which will be the first Vietnam performance and will also be a part of the celebrations surrounding 1,000 years since the founding of Hanoi in the year 1010 (the VNSO actually celebrated its 50th anniversary last year).  It will be performed at the Vietnam National Convention Center and will be televised live througout the country.  I will provide more details as the 'big day' approaches.

I will probably be writing the program notes for this performance of M8 (as I am for next month's M4 at the Hanoi Opera House).

I know that the Boston Symphony Orchestra did 4 and 7 this season and will do 2, 5, and 9 (!) next.  Also, at Tanglewood I believe they are performing 2 & 3 as well. 
I am incredibly jealous that you get to perform No. 8!

Are the B.S.O. performances supposed to be with Levine conduting? All of us know that he's been having some fairly serious health problems.

According to the BSO website, Levine will be conducting 2, 5, and 9.  The first two are in mid-October and the ninth will be performed in March.  He canceled a lot of performances this year (including parts of the full Beethoven cycle) but perhaps by then he would be fully recovered?

I understand he's slated for more back surgery, and both the BSO and the Met management are worried about whether he'll be able to meet his contractual obligations for the coming season.

Hopefully things will work out.  Of course, I will be going regardless because I am not missing any opportunities to hear Mahler performed.  Benjamin Zander conducted M9 a few months ago and I unfortunately was not able to go- my parents aren't quite as enthusiastic about sitting through an hour and a half of Mahler's symphonic genius as I!

Mr. Levine has a "long term contract" at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, and an "unsigned service agreement" with the Boston Symphony, which extends through next season. The rather vague terms in quotation marks are those used by the New York Times in an article describing Mr. Levine's current situation.

Thanks.  I stumbled upon this site in my never-ending quest learning about Mahler and am thrilled to find that other people out there share my enthusiasm.  I guess we'll have to see how things play out for Levine...

I read somewhere that with Levine's health being what it is, the N.Y. Met. may press Levine on committing himself to just one institution - namely the opera - or hit the highway. I personally thought it was a big mistake for Levine to take on such a huge committment as the B.S.O., without cutting some of his other duties. I also thought that it was a mistake for the B.S.O. to show so much interest in Levine at this stage of his career, but that's just me.
