Des Knaben Wunderhorn

Stephan Genz/Roger Vignoles (Hyperion)

Anybody else own this disc? I've been getting some good mileage out of this thing this week and it's so nice to hear Mahler reduced to the size of an ant, yet still sounding like an elephant! :)

Great stuff to my ears - the "Urlicht" is indescribably beautiful and worth the price of admission on its own. I"ve never heard of Genz before, but I really dig his vocal techinique and passion for this music. Any other must-have/classic recordings of these songs?

I'm not big fan of  piano versions of any of the various Mahler song cycles, simply because he was such a fabulous orchestrator, and his orchestrations do such a great job of "tone painting" for the texts involved. That's just me.

I'm not big fan of applying pianos to everything, like a trowl. For the most part, modern pianos are necessary evil, and sound much better utilized by good jazz players. That's just me.
