I've listened to the entire set several times now. I'm amazed just how much better this Chailly/Gewandhaus cycle is than the previous one - with Mahler's retuschen, that is - that was issued on BIS. I'm now fully convinced that what Mahler did IS an improvement upon Schumann's original versions. The music just seems bigger, without adding more instruments. Mahler achieves this by making various effects and climaxes stand-out more. It's a case of creating more - or the illusion of more - by doing less. The man was just a genius. Then again, you guys already knew that.
