Many thanks for the alert on the issuing of the classic Deryk Cooke lecture on the Mahler 10 and Golschmidt's performance, which were the watershed for the symphony. It was this lecture with its musical illustrations, as played for Alma Mahler, that led her to approve the progress on the Cooke performing edition of the draft. These, along with the 1924 facsimile, made the 10th possible for our time. I didn't know about it before but now have just ordered it from MDT.

This site quotes a bit of text from the CD booklet, thereby providing some background on the project.

Hmm... I've had it up on my StateWork blog for some time now, and was wondering why it wasn't more readily available. If you want to compare them here is the recording of the BBC broadcast: http://statework.blogspot.com/2009/01/legendary-mahler-10th-performance-that.html

Here's a link to Deryck Cooke's lecture on the realization of M10 held on the BBC in 1960, should anyone be interested.

I think it's quite clear that Goldschmidt did far more than simply, "assist" Cooke in putting this together.

Been listening this over the last few days. A document every Mahler fan should hear at least once.

How's the quality vis-à-vis the air checks you already had?

Quite good. The Cooke lecture was always divided up into many short segments. In this release they are still cued but flow smoothly. The Goldschmidt led "demonstration performance" has decent 1960 sound. I had not heard the 1964 Proms recording and it is also quite good for a live capture. No way are these demo quality but a great step forward from downloads and airchecks.

Both performances are a little rough and ready with audible horn and wind bobbles, some string intonation problems and some feeling of struggling with some passages. But the excitement of discovery was palpable in the 1964 performance and worth the price of the disc itself.

All are listed as mono, but still quite good sound considering their source from radio.
