B.G.'s LSO/Mahler all-star lineup
« on: May 17, 2007, 05:20:56 AM »
Recent discussions have made me think about just how much I've enjoyed LSO Mahler over the years. So, here's my all-star LSO lineup:

M1 - Horenstein; Solti; Levine - all of these are good

M2 - Stokowski/RCA. Also good:  Kaplan; Solti; Bernstein; Stokowski (live)

M3 - Horenstein! Decent:  MTT. Sucks: Solti

M4 - Benjamin Britten

M5 - Harold Farberman; Rudolf Schwartz (the LSO horns play fabulously on the new James De Preist                                                  M5, but he totally screws up the finale)

M6 - Harold Farberman; Levine; Jansons (prefer his Concertgebouw one)

M7 - MTT (I prefer this one to MTT's S.F. one)

M8 - Bernstein!!!

M9 - Solti; Rudolf Schwartz

DLvdE - I don't think that they have one (?)

DKW - I don't think that they have one of these either (?)

I own EMI recording with Georg Szell, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (but I prefer Chailly and Bernstein).
You also miss DKL; I own (just LP) the very fine 1970 recording (without Waldmarchen) conducted by Pierre Boulez (CBS).
Stefano.

P.S.: My !!! goes to M2 Bernstein (the Totenfeier is really terrific).

How about Wyn Morris/LSO M4th? Or Boulez/LSO M10 Adagio? I also LIKE the recent live Haitink/LSO M6th quite a lot. They should have released that recording.
