One of the few billionaires who actually liked classical music and put his money where his mouth was. Hi recording of the 2nd with London is one of my favorites. The contributions he made to the Mahler-world is impossible to overstate. He wasn't that old, either. RIP.

I actually preferred his LSO recording over the Vienna one.  Lots of organ in that one.

As a fan of both his recordings of the M2 I'm sad to hear of his death. His M2 was also the first M2 I heard in 1989.

Please read the testimonies about Gilbert Kaplan - he was about so much more than just M2. What he has done for Mahler, in general, is not to be lightly dismissed. Perhaps his biggest contribution was his foundation's assistance in restoring various Mahler locations, including his birth house. I'm lucky to have spent a long lunch with him back in the early or mid '90s.
