No surprise to me, either (am listening to it right now: quick link is
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00d0ssl/): Some of the stuff he has done with the Ensemble Modern is the best I have heard on the contemporary music front during the year, like their Lachenmann "Kontrakadenz" (
http://www.ensemblemodern.com/) which gets "You've Got to Hear It to Believe It!" review (I know) from Polarius T right here (and I doubt he's wrong).
Another recent Lachenmann disc from Stenz and the same performers pairs "Ausklang" with its inspiration, Richard Strauss' "Alpensinfonie." This is on top of my shopping list: talking about interesting programming. Another example of nice thinking is this very BBC Proms Mahler concert, which recreates the M5 world premier concert event from 1904 (with a twist)... That should be a draw in itself. Thanks for forwarding this link. There are many other treasures there (follow our notices).
