OT Berlin Philharmonic "Digital Concert Hall"
« on: December 18, 2008, 01:19:03 AM »
Dear friends,

I would just like to let you know that the Berlin Philharmonic has begun its much anticipated "Digital Concert Hall" project at http://dch.berliner-philharmoniker.de/#/en/ (English version) today.
This means that from now on, about 40 BPO concerts each season will be broadcast live (audio *and* video) over the internet. Additionally, an archive is being established containing recorded videos of past concerts of the current season. An entire "evening" (i.e. the whole program of a certain concert) will set you back 9.90 Euros (for both "live" concerts and archived ones), whilst archived performances also have the option of selecting individual works from a program at something between 2 and 6 Euros each.
The whole thing operates via live stream (no hard disk downloading for obvious reasons), so you better have some rather fast connection. Both audio and video are of exceptional DVD standard quality - from what I've sampled so far I would say that these performances are much, much better recorded than most of the current BPO / EMI output.

I know this isn't actually cheap from a certain point of view, but I was surprised at how good it turned out to be.
The first "live" broadcast will be on January 6th (Rattle; Dvorak, Slavonic Dance #8 + Brahms, Symphony #1) and two recommandations from the archive I would like to make are:
November 14th, Brahms #3 + #4 (I found the Fourth particularly stunning), and
September 15th, Bruckner #9

I was in the hall for both of these performances and must say they captured them really well.
... oh, and to bring the whole thing back to Mahlerian terrain: January 17th will have the "live" broadcast of Haitink's M7. :)
