I wonder if this means that there won't be a Concertgebouw M7? I would prefer that, since no orchestra on the planet knows the piece better.

Great news! But why not with RCO??

I guess the BRSO should be just fine with the piece. If Jansons can reproduce what he did with RCO back in early 2000's, it will be a pretty darn good M7th.

Also has great experience in Mahler and Bruckner don't forget Kubelik, Maazel

Perhaps, but the current, self-produced Concertgebouw recordings are very, VERY well recorded. Surely that counts for something.

That's right. Maazel's second Mahler cycle with BRSO is mostly excellent, much better than his first with VPO.

Maazel's commercial release of DLVDE with BRSO has splendid playing.

There are also Colin Davis conducting M1st and M8th (CDs) as well as Maazel conducting M9th (DVD).

The dark, burnished tone of the strings and brass is a perfect fit for Mahler.

I regret that this orchestra has not recorded more Mahler.

Perhaps they will.

To be totally honest I have to say that i have heard Jansons 3 times-the two in Mahler1 and 2,  M1 with the Bavarians, and find him somehow business-like, not much involved. I have to say that i was dissapointed. And I believe that the ultimate verdict for a conductor/orchestra is the real, the live event and not the recordings. Of course there are often bad nights, but you can always judge better than a cd.

Yes, but "business like and not much involved" might be fine for the 7th, as long as you're getting the myriad of tempo shifts done correctly - especially in the last two movements (which are loaded with tempo changes!). Jansons is usually pretty good at just that sort of thing. I was never a big fan of his M2 recording for Chandos. So, let's give his 7th a chance.

Let's not forget this.

Jansons' live M5th with PSO about 15 years ago was the GREATEST Mahler Fifth I ever heard. It still is at the TOP of my all time great M5ths list.

(But I have not heard his RCO recording ).

I'm with you there!  Personally, I'd prefer to hear a recent BRSO Mahler recording on SACD.
