If it were closer to summer, I'd say to camp out on the edge of town. It's fun, and it can save you a bundle of money. By the way, I think the BBC Phil. is possibly Britain's best orchestra, along with the LSO. The Halle are pretty good these days also.

I like the idea that both orchestras are combining for the 8th, as long as the choral forces are large enough, and there's a fairly strong pipe organ in the hall.

Marginilia. The now BBC Philharmonic was once the BBC Northern, the orchestra in the top choice Das Lied under Horenstein chosen for a recent Beeb Building a Library, a then-orchestra on which a little gentle scorn has been poured.

I think that tickets are selling at a fair rate already for these concerts at the Bridgewater; I was sent a letter a couple of weeks ago saying that M8 was already sold out.  I have my ticket for M3, with the BBC Phil playing under Sinaisky.  Karen Cargill is the mezzo - has any-one heard anything from her? - plus the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, and the Youth Chorus.  Each of these concerts is being accompanied by a newly-commissioned work, in this instance 'Like a Tragicomedy' by Friedrich Cerha.  It will have to go some to match the M3 I saw early in 2009 with Fisher and the Budapest though...

Stillivor - I'll let you know about hotels, central Manchester is awash with them.  Given the present weather conditions, I wouldn't advise camping!    If you can make the M3, we'll meet up and have a beer as well to toast the centenary.

I'm not surprised. The hall looks to be a winner, and I sure have heard good things about it. What little Mahler I've heard from Noseda strikes me as being pretty darn good. I assume he's doing the bulk of the conducting. Anyway, have fun you guys!

No 10 (D. Cooke's completed version, no details about which one): Inbal

I'm very curious about the result which will surely set a new milestone in the history of the RCO.


Furthermore, DG is releasing a new 20-disc Mahlerbox: Complete Edition. It's already in the DG paper catalogue and has been announced for 2010. Details about the performances are lacking. Perhaps Lenny's set, reissue no 478?

I'm sure other labels will follow without delay.

Plenty of things to look forward to, it seems...

Nice lineup. What I find most interesting are the prospects of a Boulez/RCOA M7, along with the Inbal/RCOA M10.
