They sound fabulous and remind me a lot of a Jarvi/FRSO M5th concert I attended in Seoul, S. Korea years ago!

PS: I think Jarvi's talents and conducting style fit Mahler better than Bruckner.

Very true, Barry. It may serve certain symphonies/movements particularly well. Perhaps not M5 II since there are so many little details going on. But we’ll see!

It sounds as though the microphones are farther back than in the Zinman recordings (same concert hall). The sound is less 'bright' and transparent than they are in the Zinman cycle, but things do seem less clearly defined as well. We'll just have to wait and see. That type of sound may be great for M3, M6 and M8. We shall see (or hear, rather).

The only symphonies in that cycle that I have an issue with are M3, M6 and M7. And even with M7, there are moments in it that I do like (the second Nachtmusik is absurdly slow). I think his M3 is a dud - badly recorded too. In M6, both the slow movement (nearly 20 minutes) and the finale are just too slow and decadent sounding. The first two movements are OK. I think M1 and M4 are very good (Edita Gruberova sounds great). M5 and M9 are both fine. Sinopoli's M2 is a clone of Klemperer, and it's not bad at all. His M8 has a great cast of female soloists, but less so for the three male ones. Still, it's a pretty decent M8. Sinopoli is great in the various song cycles, including the mentioned "DLvdE". The "Kindertotenlieder" with Bryn Terfel is a knockout. I don't know if your box included the shorter song cycles or not. The M2 originally came with a set of early Mahler songs orchestrated by Harold Byrns, I think it was. Those are real good too. And, of course, the playing of the Dresden Staatskapelle is terrific in the "DLvdE".

Gustav Mahler and Related Discussions / Thoughts on the DG Sinopoli cycle

Hey Friends,
I picked up the Sinopoli cycle via trade specifically for the Dresden Das Lied Von Der Erde which I had before and loved. Any other ones that strike your fancy? I listened to the First last night...and that was good...but maybe not great. The sound was a little off. The first movement to the Second did not impress me...even though Hurwitz felt that was one of the better ones in the variable set. I'll give things further listening, but I'll await some of your thoughts.

I just sampled the start of the second movement. Things sound a bit muddy, don't they? I'm having trouble discerning the textures a bit. Maybe it's all the reverb, or maybe it's how I was listening. I hope I'm wrong.

This is a team whose Mahler I'm quite excited about.

We'll see. At least the two offstage posthorn passages won't be quite as slow as they are on the Vanska recording. My Macal/Czech Phil./Exton M3 is coming from Berlin, and they've already warned that the postal service on it is going to take some time.

Barry

I LIKE Bychkov's earlier recording with WDR SO Koln very much. So, naturally I have a high expectation of this release. For one thing, timings of the two M3rds are very similar to each other.

I think you're a tad more optimistic about this release than I am, John. But we won't know until we DO know. What I'm looking forward to in M3 is an eventual release from Paavo Jarvi/Zurich Tonhalle. I have the DVD of Paavo doing it with the Frankurt Radio S.O., and like it very much. And we already know the Tonhalle folks can really play the work.

They sound terrific!

Total running time is 102 min.
